The Definition of Interior Design

Interpret the Definition of Interior Design.

Interior Design is combining functionality and beauty. It is used to take the preferences of the client and make sure that they work in the space. It is a career that enables a designer to accommodate for any needs that may be presented during the design stage of a building and even after that. The designer is in charge of making sure the health, safety and welfare (HSW) of the client and anyone else that would use the space is taken care of in any situation. They are also involved in coordinating with the different teams working on a project as well as the client, compiling materials and designs to be approved, or planning the spaces. Creating concept designs, and a lot of documentation that allows projects to move forward. They also work on aspects of the architecture of the interior of a building as that matters just as much if not more so than what color the walls are. However, the color of the walls and the fabrics used for the furniture is also important in its own right as it represents the mental side of the functionality of a space. An Interior Designer is a specially certified person capable of bringing together all the aspects of a building process to create a sustainable, functional, and enjoyable environment to last for as long as needed.

Is Interior Design what you though it was? Explain.

For the most part, yes Interior Design is what I thought it would be. I did originally think of it as more of a decorator meets architect, which isn't totally wrong but is kinda off the mark. I researched this career in highschool and found that it involved helping clients discover what they want and how it would best work for them. As well as determining how to best utilize a space. And involving the client in how to best design the space. However, it does go more in depth on certain topics than I thought it would. Such as, some of the codes that Interior Designers have to follow are very specific in some aspects. Although the codes are specific they are specific for a reason, like in a hospital or elderly care facility, materials need to meet a certain standard or else issues could arise. The healthcare side of things is where a lot of my misconceptions came into play as I was unaware of just how much attention is put into the TINIEST details to ensure the safety of the public.

Inspiration!
